Area and population

Area: 1,283.42 km2

Population: 951.572; Population density: 757.8 persons/km2 (2011).

It comprises 6 urban districts: Hai Chau, Cam Le, Thanh Khe, Lien Chieu, Ngu Hanh Son and Son Tra; 1 rural district: Hoa Vang; and 1 island district: Hoang Sa.

 

Geographic location

The coastal city of Da Nang is situated at the very heart of Viet Nam, about one-hour flight from Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.  It lies on the north-south communications axis of land (National Highway 1A), rail, sea and air routes.  Da Nang borders Thua Thien - Hue Province in the north, Quang Nam Province in the south and the west, and the Eastern Sea in the east.

 

Climate

It is located in a typical tropical area influenced by monsoons.  There are two seasons. The wet season lasts from August to December and the dry from January to July.  The annual average temperature is 25.90C and average humidity is 83.4%.  The 1,500 metre high Ba Na Mountain has an average temperature of 200C.  Rainfall average 2,504.57 mm a year and annual average sunshine hours are 2,1556.2.

 

Friendly investment environment

As a young and dynamic city, in recent years, with bold development policies and breakthroughs, Da Nang has attained outstanding achievements on socio-economic development to be well on the way to become a green, clean and beautiful city, and an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists and investors.  In 2012, it is estimated that about 4,000 foreigners called Da Nang their second home.

The city has pioneered in renovation and sustainable urban development.  It has had relatively continuous and stable economic growth in line with advanced infrastructure and upgraded living standards. As one of the five biggest cities in Viet Nam, the role of the core city and socio-economic centre of Da Nang in the central region and highlands of Viet Nam is continuously confirmed.  The city is trying its utmost to improve its investment and business environment and policies to provide the best support to entrepreneurs and investors.    

 

  • Da Nang has the most favourable business environment in the central region of Viet Nam.  The city topped the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) rankings in Viet Nam for three consecutive years (2008 – 2010).
  • Da Nang had the leading position in term of readiness for ICT application and development (Vietnam ICT Index) for four consecutive years (2009-2012).
  • The only city in Viet Nam, and one of the ten ASEAN cities, won the “ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Award” in 2011.
  • The outstanding city of Viet Nam, one of the 6 cities of Asia, was chosen by Channel News Asia (CNA) to shoot an episode of “Boom Town Asia” in February 2012.
  • Da Nang was selected as one of the 20 cities to be involved in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Low Carbon Model Town Project (the 44th meeting of the APEC Energy Working Group (EWG) which was held in Washington DC, USA, in November 2012).

Many humane social policies and such programmes as “Five Nos” and “Three must-haves” have been implemented with the participation of the community so that Da Nang can become a modern and civilised city with a good cultural environment and lifestyle, and a high quality of life.

Da Nang is implementing a project to develop it into an environmentally-friendly city by 2020.  The project involves specific action programmes to increase the city’s green area and public space.  In addition, it set the target of meeting criteria on water supply and air quality, and increasing the city’s adaptability to climate changes.

The cost of living in Da Nang is fairly reasonable compared to that of other big cities in Viet Nam.

 

Plentiful tourism potential

Da Nang is on the 1,500km World Heritage Road stretching along the coast of the central region of Viet Nam. Travelling along National Highway 1A from Da Nang, visitors can conveniently access four of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Viet Nam, comprising the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Hue Imperial City, Hoi An Old Town, and My Son Cham Sanctuary.     

 

The city is endowed with a 70km coastline with numerous wonderful beaches bright with sunshine much of the year.

  • Da Nang beach was ranked by the US Forbes Magazine as one of the 6 world’s most luxurious beaches in 2005.
  • The Australian Sunday Herald Sun ranked Da Nang’s My Khe Beach in the top 10 Asian beaches in 2009.

 

Da Nang is also famous for such tourism sites as the Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills Resort, Son Tra Peninsula and the Museum of Cham Sculpture.

 

It is Da Nang’s traditional festivals such as Quan The Am (Goddess of Mercy Festival), and Cau Ngu (Whale Festival) with various activities such as “bai choi” singing, “ho cheo thuyen” singing (boat rowing song), “ho khoan” singing (question and answer song), and boat racing that vividly reflect the rich cultural life and national identity of the people of the city.

 

The Da Nang International Fireworks Competition held every two years is a special tourism and cultural event of the city.

 

Furthermore, diverse tourist facilities and services are available in the city to meet the demands of visitors:

  • Many luxury resorts including such famous brand names as Hyatt, Novotel, Pullman, Intercontinental, Furama, Pulchara and Mercure
  • Crown International Club - the only casino in the central region of Viet Nam; The Dunes Golf Course designed by the Australian golf legend and former world No. 1 Greg Norman 
  • An international standard marina is under construction
