Tourism has been defined as one of the key industries in Da Nang’s strategic development orientation. Over the part five years, the city has tried its utmost to build the image of a modern and dynamic city with clean environment and a strategy of developing events and community festivals.
It is reported that the number of visitors to Da Nang had an annual average growth rate of 21.78% over the period 2008 – 2012. The number of tourist arrivals to the city has increased from more than 1.2 million in 2008 to over 2.65 million, including more than 630,000 foreign visitors, in 2012.
The rapid and synchronous development of the city’s infrastructure is one of the highlights. Upgraded transport system with the construction of new bridges across the Han River has facilitated the travel amongst tourist sites and created favourable conditions for visitors to enjoy beautiful tourist streets of Da Nang. The recent upgrade of the Da Nang International Airport with 16 international air routes connecting the city to countries worldwide has helped tourists come to the seaside city more conveniently.
The city’s total of 181 hotels with 6,089 rooms in 2010 has increased to 326 hotels with 10,570 rooms in 2012. The room figure is estimated to increase by 5,000 up to 2015. Many big tourism projects with such world-class band names as Intercontinental, Hyatt, Pullman, Novotel and Mercure set foot in the city. This has contributed to creating a new image for the beautiful coast line of Da Nang, and meeting the increasing accommodation demands of various types of visitors to the city.
TTG Asia, a leading travel magazine in the Asia-Pacific region, recently reported that UK tour operators are seeing “phenomenal” increases in demand for Da Nang in the central region of Viet Nam and “Da Nang is rising as rival to Indonesia’s Bali”. In addition, they are seeing a “reasonable” start to bookings for Da Nang, which was recently added to their programme.
